I like taking photos of walls. Walls are fascinating things. They come in different shapes, colours, and textures, and we can find out many things about societies and cultures by looking at walls.

Some walls are colourful and elegantly built, schowing an aesthetic style of the time. Some walls are simple and plain, exposing roughness of raw materials brought from local hills and mountains. Some are standing gloriously, depicting the greatness of the mankind. Some have witnessed pain and suffering of human tragedies.

Whether I am travelling on a foreign land or exploring back streets of my hometown, I am drawn to walls because walls tell stories about people and places just like history books and diaries.

「言語は文化の表現だ」と大学の言語学の教授が言っているのを覚えているが「壁」にも同じことが言えると思う。土地や文化が違えば、壁の種類も使い方も、そして壁そのもの存在価値も変わってくる。

カラフルな装飾をまとった壁もあれば、シンプルで素材その物の色や風合いを出した壁もある。モダンな真新しい壁もあれば、ローマで見たような何十世紀も前からそこにある壁もある。

壁の形がどうであれ、壁にはやはり興味をそそられる。その向こう側に隠された秘密が何なのかと想像するのは面白いし、その秘密を人がどう隠そうとしたかを考えるのも面白い。
