Our last trip to Europe included Belgium, and Gent was my best pick.

I likemedieval towns, and Gent has well preserved beautiful medieval buildings. I walked around the town at night to take some photos, and those dark ally ways felted like traveling back to the dark age. I must also add, a sight of those stonewall buildings and arch bridges lighting up at night was simply impressive.

It is a touristy town, but I think it has a right amount of touristy things, which makes the place interesting enough for tourists to visit but local life is not being run down by continuous influxes of visitors on tour buses. After all it is a relatively small town. Just walking 10 min away from the centre of the old town, we saw school kids on their way to home while us having good coffee in a cafe appeared to be a popular place for locals.

Our main reason to visit Belgium was to see paintings of Belgian impressionism. I wanted to see paintings of Emile Claus in particular. He was the pioneer of Belgian Impressionism movement known as Belgian luminism. The Museum of Fine Arts Gent has its nice collection of Belgian impressionism including Claus’s paintings.

I loved Gent. It was pretty and a nice town. I think it is a hidden gem.

この四月に行ったベルギーのヘントの中世の建物が残る美しい街だった。おとぎ話に出て来る様な可愛いお城や、ボートに乗っての運河クルーズなど、観光を売りにしているのだが、行きすぎた観光地化のせいで地元の生活感が失われているような感じではなかった。旧市街から１０分も歩けば、登下校をする地元の小学生たちが歩いていたり、地元の人で賑わうカフェがあったりする。街中に大学もあるので学生も多い感じだった。

何百年も前からある路地を登校したり通勤したり買い物に行ったり。中世の時代に作られた石の建造物の普遍性と現在そこに住む人たちの日常が良く調和した街だと思う。やっぱりこんな街を歩くのは面白い。

ベルギーに行った一番の理由は、ベルギー印象派の絵を見たかったこと。モネやルノアールの絵なら、パリはもとより、東京だろうとロンドンだろうと、そこそこ大きな都市にある美術館に行けば見ることができる。だが、ベルギー印象派となるとなかなか見れる機会がない。ヘントの美術館では、ベルギー印象派の絵が色々と見ることができた。パリのオルセー美術館やオランジェリーの様に人で溢れているなんてことは無い。他に誰もいない部屋で好きなエミール・クラウスの絵を独り占め。

ヘントは、素敵な街だった。
