My friend and I went to the town of York for an over night camping trip during the Easter break. The last time I went to York was in 1993, and it was on one of excursions that took place while I was studying at a local English school. I hardly remembered anything about York other than we took a train ride to there to see the Jazz festival, so the trip last week was very refreshing.
先日のイースターの休みに友達とヨークという町に行ってきた。前に一度だけ行ったことがあるが、それも２０年近く前。電車に乗ってジャズフェスティバルに行ったのは覚えているが他は全く記憶になかった。「何も覚えていないのは、何も面白い物が無かったから」と期待値ゼロで行ったせいなのかもしれないが、ヨークは結構良い町だと思った。
I think the place is charming and it has turned out to be a great place to ride around. While we were riding around the town, we saw a number of historic buildings which looked quite interesting. Avon River Trail offers a fun gravel riding experience ideal as a chilling out afternoon ride, and climbing up to a look out on the Mount Brown has 15% incline challenging enough for anyone who loves to ride and climb.
町の周りを自転車で散策したけど、色々な所に古い建物や教会などが残っていて思いの外面白かった。修学旅行で行った時にはつまらないと思った場所に、大人になって行って見たら面白かったという感じだと思う。川沿いのグラベルロードも良く整備されているし、丘の上の高台までの道は、最大１５％の登りでちょっとした山越え感を楽しめる。
I love old cars and motorcycles, and although my friend was bit reluctant to pay something like $15 to go inside, I convinced him to open his wallet. There are some nice pieces of cars and motorbikes in the museum, and it’s worth the money I think. I loved those bubble cars, and I really wish if they are sold with the same design but with an electric motor today.
古い車やバイクが好きなので町中の博物館をチェック。古いフィアットやスバル３６０のバブルカー、デザインは全くのそのままで、電気自動車にして売ってほしい。トヨタのコロナも今から見たら結構かっこいい。
I think York can do better with more cafes and restaurants to choose though. Especially for dinner. The whole town pretty much closed down at night apart from a couple of pubs / hotels, and food we had at one of those joints wasn’t bad, but nothing to write about it from a perspective of tourists on holiday. I think we should have stayed at a camp site to cook own meal as we had originally planned. We were bit too lazy to cook, guessing climbing up to the hill top might have taken toll.
昼間は賑わっていたけど、夜は誰もいない。メインストリートはまるでゴーストタウン。夜ご飯を食べる所は町中のパブ２軒くらい。悪くはなかったけど、観光客の視点から見たらちょっと残念。次回はキャンプ場で自炊。町外れのキャラバンパークは、一区画で３０ドル。楽にテントが二つ設営できるスペース。このご時世一人１５ドルはとても良心的だと思う。
